Hongkong Post announces "One Person, One Letter" Free Post Day
***********************************************************

The Acting Postmaster General, Mr Chan Yau-fung, today (October 5) announced that in support of World Post Day on October 9, Hongkong Post will organise the "One Person, One Letter" Free Post Day on that day.

World Post Day is celebrated each year on October 9, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern.  It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969.  Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebration.

The Free Post Day was launched locally in 2004 to encourage people to send caring messages to loved ones.  "Letter-writing is a unique means of communication," Mr Chan said. "It is also a powerful and meaningful way to communicate with someone important to you.  The warmth and value of a personal letter can hardly be equalled by 10 phone calls or 20 emails. It is for this reason, we are organising the 'One Person, One Letter' free post activity again this year.  The programme also supports the 'Linking People' mission of our corporate purpose statement, 'Linking People, Delivering Business'."

On Free Post Day, people are invited to send one postage-free letter to a special recipient in Hong Kong.  To encourage participation in the activity, there will be special posting boxes available at 10 designated post offices across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories to receive their postings on that day (See attachment for the details of posting arrangements, conditions and list of designated post offices).

For further information about the "One Person, One Letter" free post activity, please visit local post offices or the Hongkong Post website (www.hongkongpost.com), or call the Hongkong Post hotline (Tel: 2921 2222).
