Employer fined $90,000 for wage offences

    A manufacturing company, Po Yuen (To's) Machine Factory Limited was fined $90,000 at the Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts today (October 4) for wage offences under the Employment Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The employer failed to pay wages to 11 employees within 7 days of the expiry of the wage period as required by the ordinance.

     According to Section 23 of the Employment Ordinance, wages due on expiry of the last day of the wage period shall be paid as soon as practicable, but not later than 7 days. Failure to do so could mean a maximum fine of $350,000 and imprisonment for 3 years.

     Employees who are owed wages should immediately report to the Labour Department's complaint hotline on 2815 2200.
