A two-day horticulture education exhibition entitled "Know More about Orchids" will be held on Saturday and Sunday (October 6 and 7) from 10am to 4pm at the Arcade of Kowloon Park. Admission is free.
Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the exhibition aims to arouse public interest in horticulture and enhance their awareness of greening.
Orchids are monocotyledons. They are perennial herbs and belong to the Orchidaceae family. There are currently more than 25,000 known species of orchids. Common species include Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, Dendrobium and Cymbidium.
The family of orchids is large and diverse. Through the description on display panels, people can learn more about the types, their growing habits, propagation and maintenance.
Fringe activities including a jig-saw puzzle, recycled produce workshops and a demonstration on making decorations from plants will be held during the exhibition at the Kowloon Park Arcade. Visitors can also share the fun of pot planting under the guidance of horticulture instructors.
Talks entitled "Introduction to Orchids" and "Planting and Maintenance of Orchids" will be given at the Secondary Hall of Kowloon Park Sports Centre, while workshops on planting and propagation of orchids will be held at the Green Education and Resource Centre.
