The 2007 nomination exercise to return representatives of arts interests for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) completed yesterday (September 30).
This year, of the 7,029 registered voters, 1,836 voters turned out to vote for their representatives in the six contested arts interests, representing an increase of 57.87% over 1,163 voters recorded in the 2004 polling. The voter turnout rate was 26.12%.
Commenting on the voter turnout, a spokesman for the Home Affairs Bureau said the Government was pleased with the encouraging response from voters.
"The significant increase reflects the arts community's enthusiasm in direct participation in the development of the arts in Hong Kong through nominating their representatives to join the HKADC," the spokesman said.
Upon completion of polling at 9pm yesterday, ballots were immediately counted. The following candidates received the highest number of votes in their respective arts interests -
* Mr Chan Ching Kiu, Stephen (Arts Criticism)
* Mr Ho Ho Chuen (Dance)
* Mr Han Shan Bi (Hon Man Po) (Literary Arts)
* Ms Fei Barbara (Music)
* Mr Lee Kam Yin (Visual Arts)
* Mr Yuen Siu Fai (Chinese Opera (Xiqu))
As there was only one candidate standing for nomination in each of the other four arts interests, no polling was conducted for these arts interests and the following candidates were returned uncontested -
* Mr Wu Shou Nan (NG Kang Fai) (Arts Administration)
* Ms Wong So Lan (Arts Education)
* Mr Ko Tin Lung (Drama)
* Mr To Kei Fung (Film Arts)
The list of nominated representatives of the 10 arts interests will be submitted to the Chief Executive for consideration of appointment to the HKADC for the next term, which will begin on January 1, 2008.
