World-class flutist Sir James Galway to perform in October (with photo)
***********************************************************

Sir James Galway, otherwise known as "the man with the golden flute", will revisit Hong Kong for a recital next month (October) with pianist Phillip Moll and guest flutist Lady Jeanne Galway.

The recital will be held at 8pm on October 30 (Tuesday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, featuring Mozart's "Sonata in F"; Prokofiev's "Sonata in D"; Bazzini's "La Ronde des Lutins"; Saint-Saens' "Airs de Ballet d'Ascanio"; Ravel's "Piece en Forme de Habanera"; Godard's "Suite de Trois Morceaux"; Franz & Karl Doppler's "Souvenir de Prague Duo Concertante Op. 24 sur des motifs bohemians" and Chaminade's "Concertino in D".

With his unique sound and superb musicianship, Sir James Galway has a charismatic appeal that crosses all musical boundaries and has made him one of the most respected and sought-after performing artists of our time.

Galway was appointed principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic at an early age and since 1975 he has enjoyed a career as a soloist and conductor of numerous orchestras. He took part in "The Wall" concert in Berlin and was the only classical musician to participate in the Nobel Peace Concert.

Galway has received many awards, including "Musician of the Year" from Musical America; "Record of the Year" from "Billboard and Cashbox"; "President's Merit Award" from the Recording Academy and "Outstanding Contribution to Classical Music" of the prestigious Classic Brits Awards. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England has honoured him twice: in 1979 with an Order of the British Empire and in 2001 with a Knighthood for services to music.

He is the President of "Flutewise", which donates instruments to low-income students and young people with disabilities.

"Flute Recital by Sir James Galway", the first programme in this year's "Encore Series", is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
