The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (September 20) the September 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, four feature articles entitled "Business Receipts Indices for Service Industries", "Port Cargo Statistics, 2001 to 2006" , "The Characteristics of Women and Men, 2006" and "The Fertility Trend in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2006" are included.
"Business Receipts Indices for Service Industries"
The C&SD has been compiling the quarterly Business Receipts Indices (BRIs) of selected service industries to gauge their short term business performance since 1993. This feature article presents the methodology for compiling the BRIs and the performance of individual service industries in recent years as reflected by the movements of the BRIs.

"Port Cargo Statistics, 2001 to 2006"
The port of Hong Kong is a hub of the Asia-Pacific region. Hong Kong's port cargo throughput increased by 4% from 230 million tonnes in 2005 to 238 million tonnes in 2006. The port cargo movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China accounted for 40% of Hong Kong's port cargo throughput in 2006. Furthermore, about 76% of these Mainland-Hong Kong port cargo movements were between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region. This feature article analyses the port cargo statistics of Hong Kong during the period from 2001 to 2006.

"The Characteristics of Women and Men, 2006"
The 2006 Population By-census was conducted in July to August 2006. Results of the By-census have been released in stages, with the first report Summary Results released in February 2007. The By-census provides a wealth of data on the socio-economic characteristics of the population in Hong Kong, thus allowing studies to be undertaken on various facets of the community. This feature article utilizes the results of the 2006 Population By-census and also statistics from other sources to give an overview of the characteristics of women and men in Hong Kong.

"The Fertility Trend in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2006"
Hong Kong's fertility experienced a marked and continuous decline in the past two decades. There has been a moderate increase in fertility rate in recent years. This feature article gives a brief account of the fertility trend in Hong Kong over the period from 1981 to 2006.
