Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra will be in Hong Kong next month (October) to present "The Four Seasons: A Cycle of the Sun", a concert which re-interprets of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" with a fusion of Western orchestra and non-Western sound sources.
The programme features the mood of four seasons from Vivaldi's Concerto in E, Op. 8, No.1, "La primavera" (Spring) by violist Patricia Ahern; Zamboni's "Fuga" (from Sonate d'intavolatura di leuto, 1718) by lute player Lucas Harris and Chinese Ancient Tune "White Snow in Spring" by pipa player Wen Zhao. It will be followed by "Monsoon Raag" by sarangi player Aruna Narayan; Vivaldi's Concerto in G Minor, Op. 8, No. 2, "L'estate" (Summer) by violist Julia Wedman and improvised "Ciaconna". Violist Christopher Verrette will perform Vivaldi's Concerto in F, Op. 8, No. 3, "L'autumno" (Autumn). Winter comes the last with singing by members of Aqsarniit and Danna's "L'inverno", after Vivaldi's "Winter" by violist Jeanne Lamon, pipa player Wen Zhao, sarangi player Aruna Narayan and insuit throat singers of Aqsarniit.
Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, hailed as "one of the world's top baroque orchestras" by Gramophone Magazine, was founded by Kenneth Solway and Susan Graves in 1979. Under the inspired leadership of music director and concertmaster Jeanne Lamon since 1981, Tafelmusik has achieved international recognition for its concerts and recordings. The ensemble has 17 core members and is expanded as the need arises.
Tafelmusik's success has taken it around the world, with regular tours across North America, Europe, and Asia. This season's touring schedule includes performances in Europe, the US and Canada, in addition to its tour of Asia.
Tafelmusik has released 75 CDs on the Analekta, Sony Classical, CBC Records, BMG Classics, Hyperion and Collegium labels, and has been awarded many international recording prizes, including nine Junos. The latest CD is Mozart Symphonies 40 & 41, conducted by Bruno Weil and released in Canada by Analekta and in Europe and Asia by Sony BMG on the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi label.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert will be staged at 8pm, October 21 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $360, $260, $180 and $100 will be available from September 14 onwards at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
