Recruitment of Director of Broadcasting
***************************************

In response to media enquiries, a spokesman for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau said today (September 7) that the Government would recruit a suitable candidate to fill the post of the Director of Broadcasting through an open recruitment cum in-service appointment exercise. The appointment will be for a term of two and a half years.

"We understand the public concern about the arrangements regarding the appointment of the Director of Broadcasting. To identify the most suitable candidate for the post, the Government considers it necessary to allow eligible candidates from the private sector and within the civil service to apply for the position through an open process," the spokesman said.

In view of the requirement that the Director of Broadcasting should be very familiar with the local environment and social condition, the Government would conduct the recruitment exercise locally. Candidates should be permanent Hong Kong residents; have experience in managing a large public or private organisation; and possess leadership and management capabilities of heading a local public broadcasting organisation. Incumbent substantive Directorate Officers at Directorate Pay Scale Point 2 (D2) or above within the civil service who have equivalent managerial or administrative experience could also apply for the post.

In accordance with the established procedures of open recruitment of senior Government officials, the Government had commenced to engage an agency to provide executive search services for the recruitment exercise. It was expected that the exercise to engage the executive search agency would complete in two to three weeks. Upon the engagement of the executive search agency, vacancy advertisement for the post would then be placed which would set out further details of the requirements for potential candidates.

The Director of Broadcasting vacancy arose from the approval of Mr Chu Pui-hing's early retirement application by the Civil Service Bureau in accordance with the relevant civil service regulation. Mr Chu would complete all his leave in August 2008 and leave the Government. The Deputy Director of Broadcasting, Ms Gracie Foo Siu-wai, would continue to act up the Director post until the new Director of Broadcasting assumes office.
