Nominations for District Council election open on October 2
***********************************************************

The nomination period for the 2007 District Council election will run from October 2 to 15.

A total of 405 elected members, one for each of the 405 constituencies in the 18 Districts, will be returned in the polls to be held on November 18.

A spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) said today (August 31) that a candidate must be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 21 or above and have ordinarily resided in Hong Kong for the three years immediately before his or her nomination.

"A nomination must be subscribed by 10 registered electors of the constituency concerned. Each elector may subscribe to only one nomination," the spokesman said.

Nominees must hand in the completed nomination form, together with an election deposit of $3,000, in person to the respective Returning Officer within the nomination period. Nominations are accepted from 9am to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays, and from 9am to noon on Saturdays.

The District Officers in the 18 Districts have been appointed as Returning Officers for the election in their respective district. Enquiries about the nomination procedures can be made to the Returning Officers or at the election hotline, 2891 1001.

"Nominees are advised to submit their nominations as early as possible so that they will have time to rectify any mistakes in the nominations before the deadline," the spokesman said.

Nomination forms are available at the 18 District Offices and the REO Office at 10/F, Harbour Centre, 25 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. They can also be downloaded from the REO website at www.reo.gov.hk.

Notices of the election and of the appointment of Returning Officers have been published in the Gazette today.
