Two jailed for obstructing public officer

    Two men who obstructed a public officer were today (August 29) sentenced to nine weeks' imprisonment by the Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts.

     A man, who was found spitting near Yuen Long Kin Yip Street Cooked Food Market, on May 22, refused to co-operate and obstructed a Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officer when the officer took prosecution action.  He was fined $1,500 for spitting in a public place, and sentenced to nine weeks' imprisonment for obstructing a public officer in the execution of his duty.

     Another man was also sentenced to nine weeks' imprisonment by the court for obstructing public officer in the same incident by shouting at the officer and lying on the ground.
 
     A department spokesman reminded the public to observe public hygiene regulations.

     "Obstructing public officers is not only wrong, but also carries serious legal consequences," the spokesman warned.

     "People should co-operate with law enforcement officers in the execution of their duties."
