As one of the performances of "Asian Puppet Series", Hyundai Puppet Theatre from Korea will present "Puppet City: A Korean Fantasy" in October to showcase superb puppet performance techniques and traditional Korean culture.
"Watching the puppets is enjoyable enough, but watching their operators manipulating them can be utterly absorbing." ¡V "The Scotsman"
In the show, there are Korean traditional music and dance, as well as modern puppetry. This extraordinary puppet show will please people of all ages. This show consists of many dances which were performed in the Royal House with Korean classical music. Audiences will enjoy and feel the traditional and modern aspect of Korean culture.
Hyundai Puppet Theatre was founded in 1962 by Yong-Suk Cho, who is still the artistic director. The troupe aims to foster the imagination and creativity of children, nurturing the seeds of their dreams, and promoting puppetry as a serious art, instead of being an entertainment just for children. They have previously produced many well-loved television shows in South Korea, including "Dr. Buri Buri" and "I Can Do It by Myself", and stage productions including "Korean Fantasy", "Marionette Concert" and "The Dream of Christmas".
The troupe has also toured many parts of the world including Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Poland, Israel, UK and the Czech Republic and participated in Iida Puppet Festa in Japan, Haifa International Theatre Festival in Israel, Korczak Festival 2004 in Poland, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2006. They have also received many awards such as Special Broadcasting Award and Best Puppet Drama.
Yong-Suk Cho has created many characters and television shows in Korea. He also supervised the production of many Olympics mascots including Sam for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and Hodori for the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics.
