A spokesman for the Rating and Valuation Department reminded people today (August 20) that they should observe the deadline on their demand notes in the payment of rates and Government rent.
Under the provisions of the Rating Ordinance and the Government Rent (Assessment and Collection) Ordinance, rates and Government rent are payable quarterly within the first month of each quarter.
"A surcharge of 5% will be imposed for late payment," the spokesman said.
"A further surcharge of 10% will be levied on the outstanding amount (including the 5% surcharge) which remains unpaid six months after the last day for payment," he said.
The spokesman stressed that non-receipt or late receipt of the demand note did not alter the requirement that the Rates and Government rent must be paid on or before the deadline specified on the demand note.
The demand notes for Rates and Government rent for the next quarter from October to December will be issued in early October and the payment should be made on or before the end of the month.
