"Bluebeard" a concert out of the box
************************************

Local music ensemble "the box" will celebrate its 20th anniversary next month (September) by performing the theatrical concert "Bluebeard".

Inspired by the plot of Charles Perrault's horrific folk tale and Bela Bartok's one-act opera "Duke Bluebeard's Castle", founders of the Hong Kong-based ensemble Kung Chi Shing and Peter Suart will join musicians Chau Chin Tung, Cheung Yee Sik, Eli Fung, Rob Lamont and Veegay Lee, with Ogawa Mariko's movement, Lo Yin Shan's video and Billy Chan's lighting, to produce a multimedia performance of incidental music, theatrical gestures, dialogue and video imagery.

Depicting the inter-relation and authority between genders, the performances will be staged at 8pm on September 21 and 22 (Friday and Saturday) at the Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre. There are some violent themes and is not suitable for young people under 15.

A young woman, newly wed, is granted the run of her husband Bluebeard's castle when he leaves on business but she is forbidden from entering one room. Curiosity drives her to open the door and she finds a room of dismembered women: her husband's previous wives. Bluebeard returns to discover her betrayal. He is about to slaughter her too ...

Kung and Suart founded "the box" in 1987. The duo have collaborated with dancers, artists and theatre people to present a series of concerts and music theatre works, combining various genres, popular and serious in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Cuba. Their works often draw on works of literature, including "The Bridge" (Kafka), "Sleeping Beauty" (Kawabata and the fairytale), "Salome" (Wilde and the Bible) and "Beauty and the Beast" (the fairytale).

"Bluebeard" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
