Appointments announced for post-merger MTR Corporation Limited

    The Government announced today (August 8) that in accordance with the terms of the rail merger, the Financial Secretary Incorporated has selected Dr Raymond Ch'ien Kuo Fung as the Chairman (designate) and Mr Chow Chung Kong as Chief Executive Officer (designate) of the post-merger MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL).

     The appointments will take effect on the day to be appointed by the Secretary for Transport and Housing by notice published in the Gazette under section 2 of the Rail Merger Ordinance.

     Dr Ch'ien is the incumbent chairman of MTRCL.  He has been a member of the board of directors since 1998, and was first appointed chairman in July, 2003.

     Mr Chow is the incumbent Chief Executive Officer of MTRCL.  He joined MTRCL as Chief Executive Officer in December, 2003.

     Commenting on the appointments, the Acting Financial Secretary, Mr Frederick Ma, said the railway network was the backbone of Hong Kong's transport system.  "The strong leadership and outstanding management abilities of Dr Ch'ien and Mr Chow will ensure that the merged corporation will continue to provide quality services to the public," Mr Ma said.
