FS' response to press enquiries

The Hang Seng Index fell 641 points (-2.76%) today (July 27). In response to press enquiries, the Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, said the performance of today's market was mainly affected by the weak performance of overseas markets and profit-taking activities.

Mr Tsang said, "Given that the Hang Seng Index has reached its record high level, and that the market has been rather volatile recently, investors should invest within their means. Investors should fully understand the operation of the industries and companies in which they are investing, as well as the related investment risks."

The Hang Seng Index closed at 22,570 points today with a turnover of HK$112.5 billion, which is the second-largest in history.
