More than 10,000 youngsters from the Mainland, Macau, Taiwan and Hong Kong gathered today (June 29) at the Hong Kong Coliseum to perform a percussion piece, which is expected to set a new world record.
The record attempt was part of the celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR.
The performance was witnessed by Chairman of the Academy for Performing Arts' Council Dr Leung Nai-kong and Music Director of Hong Kong Sinfonietta Ms Yip Wing-sie.
Renowned percussionist Dr Lung Heung-wing, who arranged the record-breaking percussion piece led the young drummers playing tambourine, rattle drum with two cords threaded with wood pellets, single-head Chinese drum, rattle drum and tamborim.
The drum rally is also part of the "Dragon Jamboree" programme to be staged tomorrow (June 30), with other attractions like dragon dance by youngsters, 10-piano ensemble by young music talent, mass singing, dance medley of the traditional and the popular, as well as a showcase of pop stars.
Pianists performing in the 10-piano ensemble are Colleen Lee, Aristo Sham, Crystal Lam, Chau Lok-ping, Chau Lok-ting, Julie Kuok, Eric Fung, Rachel Cheung, Wong Wai-yin, and Lio Kuok-wai. Also in the show are precocious young pianist Zhang Shengliang from the Mainland, pop singers Alan Tam, Eason Chan, Hins Cheung, Cao Ge, Kelly Chen, TWINS, Hacken Lee, Joey Yung and Leo Ku.
And 100 children born in 1997 will be participating in the "Happy Birthday" session.
The show will be broadcast live on RTHK Radio 2 and TVB Jade at 3pm tomorrow (June 30).
The "Dragon Jamboree", in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR, is presented by the Home Affairs Bureau, All-China Youth Federation, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department; co-presented by Radio Television Hong Kong, Home Affairs Department, the Education and Manpower Bureau and China Central Television.
