Medical incident in Prince of Wales Hospital
********************************************

In response to media enquiries, a spokesperson for Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) gave the following reply:

An incident of radiotherapy procedure involving a 58-year-old male patient took place in February 2007.

PWH has investigated into the incident and found that two radiographers had not checked the computer plan, X-ray film and skin marking photo according to established protocol. This resulted in a shift of several centimetres from the correct isocentre.

The hospital had explained to the family of the patient about the incident which would not affect the health and prognosis of the patient.  The condition of the patient is stable and no hospitalisation is required.

To prevent similar incidents happening again, PWH has enhanced the supervision for radiotherapy procedure and doctors will review the computer plan, X-ray film and skin marking photo before the delivery of treatment by radiographer.

According to the human resources policy, the involved radiographers had been counselled by the consultant in-charge of the radiotherapy service and the case was documented.
