***************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (June 21) the June 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, five feature articles entitled "Composite Employment Estimates 2006", "Socio-economic Characteristics of Hong Kong Residents Making Personal Travel to the Mainland of China, 2006", "The Chinese Medicine Sector in Hong Kong, 2006", "Container Statistics, 2001-2006" and "Statistics on Sectoral Concentration" are included.

"Composite Employment Estimates 2006"

The Composite Employment Estimates (CEE) was first introduced in a feature article in the March 1997 issue of the Digest.  Updates of the CEE have subsequently been provided in feature articles of the Digest on an annual basis.

The employment share of the various service sectors taken together increased from 83.8% to 86.3% of the total employment during 2001 to 2006.  Among them, the "Import and export trade" engaged 557 400 persons or 16.3% in 2006; the "Other community, social and personal services" 513 500 or 15.0%, and the "Wholesale and retail trades" 358 500 persons or 10.5%.

On the other hand, the combined employment share of the "Manufacturing" and "Construction" sectors continued to decline, from 15.5% in 2001 to 13.1% in 2006.  This reflects the continued structural shift of the economy towards the service sectors during the period.

This feature article provides the CEE figures for 2001-2006.  It also gives an account of the characteristics of CEE and briefly discusses the differences and usage of the CEE vis-a-vis the other employment figures.

"Socio-economic Characteristics of Hong Kong Residents Making Personal Travel to the Mainland of China, 2006"

Analyses of the social and economic characteristics of Hong Kong residents making personal travel to the mainland of China (the Mainland) were first introduced in a feature article in the May 2002 issue of the Digest.  Updates of the analyses are provided annually.

In 2006, Hong Kong residents made a total of 43.4 million personal trips to the Mainland.  Personal travel covers travel in package tour mode and non-package tour mode for purposes such as holiday-making, visits to friends and relatives, and attending recreational and cultural programmes.

Analysed by sex, proportion of personal trips made by males (57%) was higher.  Analysed by age, the highest proportion of personal trips was made by residents in the age group 40-49 (26%).

Among the trips in respect of personal travel by Hong Kong residents to the Mainland, 24.8 million person-trips were made by employed persons.  Of this, the highest proportion was made by residents worked in the wholesale, retail and import/export trades, restaurants and hotels sector (29%).
