Three youth orchestras and two soloists from the United States will join local talent in the "Symphonic Trilogy" on June 23 and July 6, featuring classical music and Chinese melodies.
The Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra and the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform at 8pm on June 23 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of the Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Programme highlights are Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" jointly performed by the prize winner of the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in 2000 Alessio Bax and the Orchestra, Shostakovich's "Festival Overture", Smetana's "Three Dances from The Bartered Bride", Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5 in E Minor" and Prelude from Symphony No. 1 "My Motherland" by local composer Pei-xun Chan. Conductors for the concert are Richard Giangiuilo, Joseph Kam and Chan Tat-kwong.
The Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra was founded in 1972. It performs five concerts every year at the world-renowned Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Centre. The orchestra performed at concert tours to France, Switzerland, Great Britain, Germany, Czech Republic and Poland.
More than 150 talented young musicians from the Vermont Youth Orchestra and the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra will perform in a joint concert at 8pm on July 6 (Friday) at the Auditorium of the Kwai Tsing Theatre.
The spectacular cultural sharing night will be led by distinguished conductors Troy Peters and Tsui Ying-fai, featuring classic works of the 20th century and Chinese folk melodies including Bloch's "Suite Hebraique" performed by the famed violist Philip Ying and the Orchestra, Tchaikovsky's "Finale form Symphony No. 4 in F Minor", Peng Xiuwen's "A Dance of the Yao", Li Minxiong's "Flying Dragon and Leaping Tiger" and Li Huanzhi's "Overture to Spring Festival". This concert is part of the summer extravaganza "International Arts Carnivals 2007".
Founded in 1963, the Vermont Youth Orchestra draws its members from talented young musicians in Vermont, New York and New Hampshire. It presents three major concerts every year at Burlington's Flynn Centre for the Performing Arts. The orchestra has also performed with the renowned violinist Midori.
The Youth Orchestra, CYCNY (Chinese Youth Corps of New York) will perform with the Hong Kong Youth Strings at 8pm on July 6 (Friday) at the Ko Shan Theatre. Under the baton of Jeffrey Liang and Tsui Lok-ming, the young musicians will play a number of Western symphonic pieces and Chinese melodies including Brahms's "Hungarian Dance No. 5", Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No.3, 1st movement", Liu Hsueyan's "When Will You Come Again", John Kander's "New York, New York" and Hardiman's "Lord of the Dance".
Since its establishment in 1995, the Youth Orchestra, CYCNY has been actively performed in the local community in New York. The orchestra had been invited to perform in Vienna, Salzburg and Prague for the Mozart Festival last summer.
All three concerts are presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $60 and $40 for the first two concerts, and $40 and $20 for the concert performed by the Youth Orchestra, CYCNY (USA) and the Hong Kong Youth Strings, are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
