Severe squalls affected various parts of Hong Kong this morning (June 8) during the passage of thunderstorms associated with a rainband under the influence of an active trough of low pressure.
The Hong Kong International Airport reported gusts up to 129km per hour around 9.45am. The Observatory issued a "squally thunderstorm" warning for the airport between 7.35am and 10.30am and a "strong wind and gust" warning for the airport between 9.27am and 10.30am.
Peak gusts of 75km per hour were recorded at Kai Tak (harbour area) and 79km per hour were recorded at Sai Kung (eastern part of Hong Kong).
This trough of low pressure is expected to continue bringing unsettled weather to the south China coastal areas in the next few days.
