The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (June 7) that the official foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong amounted to US$136.2 billion at the end of May 2007 (end-April 2007: US$136.8 billion) (Table 1).
Including unsettled forward contracts, the foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong at the end of May 2007 also stood at US$136.2 billion (end-April 2007: US$136.8 billion).
Hong Kong is the world's eighth largest holder of foreign currency reserves, after Mainland China, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, Korea, India and Singapore (Table 2).
The total foreign currency reserve assets of US$136.2 billion represent about seven times the currency in circulation or 37% of Hong Kong dollar M3.
