47 schools commended for meritorious green projects (with photos)
**********************************************************

Forty-seven primary and secondary schools and kindergartens were commended today (June 2) at the prize presentation ceremony of the Greening School Project Award in recognition of their meritorious green school projects and their contribution to environmental greening.

To promote green consciousness among students, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Greening School Subsidy Scheme provides subsidies to schools to plant more trees and shrubs in campuses and to organise more greening activities, through which students' interests and knowledge of greening can be enhanced. Awards are given to meritorious green school projects.

The Greening School Subsidy Scheme is well received as the number of participating schools has doubled since its introduction in 2000.

Speaking at the ceremony today, a member of the Community Involvement Committee in Greening of Home Affairs Bureau, Prof Wong Chi-kui, said the scheme had been well received by teachers and students since its launch, with the number of participating schools increasing steadily, rising from around 300 in the first year to some 740 this year.

"The standard of green projects are on the rise. Both teachers and students are working very hard to make their schools' environment greener and more beautiful," he said.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony included the Chief School Development Officer (Yau Tsim & Mong Kok District) of Education and Manpower Bureau, Ms Rita Chen Suk-shyan, and the Chief Leisure Manager (Passive Amenities) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Mr Wan Kuen-fat.
