2007 Edition of An Outline of Statistical Development Published
******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published the 2007 Edition of An Outline of Statistical Development today (May 31).

In line with social and economic development, the application of statistical data has become an essential element in everyday matters ranging from government policy formulation to business strategy planning and to the general public's daily life.

To provide quality statistical services, the Government Statistical Service (GSS), which comprises C&SD and statistical units in various government departments and bureaux, is dedicated to strengthening its systems further.  An updated account of the work and the development of GSS is summarised in the publication.

The publication depicts the main lines of current statistical activities and planned developments in the near future.  Details are given on recent statistical developments in a number of social and economic areas of interest to the public.

In the area of social statistics, the publication highlights the work of the 2006 Population By-census (e.g. application of various technologies to support data collection and dissemination, and release of survey results); the progress of the updating of population and labour force projections; and the conduct of various surveys on social topics to collect data to facilitate planning and policy review.

As regards economic statistics, the publication presents enhancement work in various areas.  Examples include the release of the first set of inward foreign affiliates trade in services (FATS) statistics to facilitate the understanding of the phenomena of international business operations and the monitoring of the performance of foreign affiliates that fall outside the realm of traditional economic statistics; and the enhancements to the compilation of asset management statistics to help gauge the economic contribution, operation characteristics and short-term performance of the related activities in Hong Kong.

Other development work includes the implementation of free download policy for the departmentˇ¦s publications and detailed statistical tables since mid-2006; the planned release of the new version of Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification to better reflect the latest changes in Hong Kongˇ¦s economic structure; and the preparation for the introduction of the chain volume measures of Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product.

The publication covers statistical programmes in a range of subject areas, namely population; labour; commerce and industry; prices and household expenditure; external trade; national income and balance of payments; money, banking and finance; strategic planning; education; housing; health; social welfare; law and order; transport; community information; food and environmental hygiene; leisure and cultural services; water supplies; the environment; and topical studies.

It is hoped that through a systematic introduction, the publication can help members of the public gain a better understanding of the use of official statistics and the work of GSS.
