A 60-year-old man convicted of using a false instrument and possessing false instruments with intent was sentenced to 24 months¡¦ imprisonment at Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (May 30).
The court heard that the man and a 53-year-old woman produced a US$ 1 million banknote and attempted to deposit it into their bank account newly opened at a bank in Central on September 22 last year.
Suspecting that the banknote was fake, the bank staff made a report to the Police. Police officers arrested the duo at scene and seized some false documents including bank statements and account reference letters from the woman¡¦s handbag.
They were subsequently charged with offences namely using a false instrument and possessing false instruments with intent. The man was sentenced to 24 months¡¦ imprisonment while the woman was acquitted in Eastern Magistrates¡¦ Courts today.
