A new dawn for Hong Kong symphonic band musicians

    A concert "To A New Dawn" featuring trumpet, oboe, horn, flute, clarinet, saxophone and various wind instruments will be held at 3pm on June 3 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of the Sha Tin Town Hall.

     Conducted by John Cheng, Pak Wing-heng and Lee Sing-wan, the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band and instructors of the Wind Section of the Music Office will perform at the concert. Other performing groups include the Kowloon Youth Symphonic Band, the New Territories Youth Symphonic Band and the Hong Kong Children's Symphonic Band.

     Programme highlights are a commissioned piece by the United States Continental Army Band "To A New Dawn", Berlioz's "March to Scaffold, from Symphonique Fantastique", "A Klezmer Karnival" featuring wedding dance, Jewish circle dance and German shepherd's dance, and the splendid "Pomp and Circumstance Marches, No. 1".

     Other programmes include the spirited Grundam's "Concertante for Alto Saxophone and Symphonic Band", Weber's "Second Concerto for Clarinet, 1st movement", "Three Revelations from the Lotus Sutra, 3rd Movement" which attempts to realise the beauty of peace, the appealing "The Swiss Shepherd", well-known euphonium piece "Brilliante", Vivaldi's "Concerto for Two Trumpets in C major, 1st movement".

     Formed in 1978, the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band has nurtured several generations of young musicians, creating a wider interest and reception of band music in Hong Kong. The band has about 75 members aged from 12 to 25. The band has performed with a number of distinguished guest musicians and bands both in Hong Kong and overseas.

     "To A New Dawn" concert is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
