Public consultation on Area Improvement Plan for Mong Kok shopping areas
**********************************************************

The Planning Department today (May 23) launched a public consultation exercise for the planning framework and early projects proposed under the Area Improvement Plan for the Shopping Areas of Mong Kok.

To help enhance the overall attractiveness of the shopping areas and pedestrian experience in Mong Kok, the Planning Department commissioned a study in February, 2006, to formulate an Area Improvement Plan for the Mong Kok Shopping Areas. The study has now proposed a planning framework which comprises four streams of improvement initiatives. These include proposals to improve the greening and streetscape of shopping streets, the physical appearance of main public corridors and the pedestrian connectivity within the shopping area, as well as proposals to develop new destinations for the public.

The study has selected projects at Tung Choi Street, Nathan Road and Soy Street for early implementation. Public comments on the proposed planning framework and these early projects are now invited. Based on the public views received, the Government will proceed to formulate an area improvement plan, carry out detailed design and conduct detailed technical assessments for the early projects.

The public consultation exercise will last for two months until the end of July. Consultation with stakeholders, local community and interest groups will be carried out. There will be a roving exhibition at various locations in Mong Kok and a public forum will be held on June 2 at the Mong Kok Community Hall.

Details of the proposals are presented in a Consultation Digest posted at the Planning Department's website at http://www.pland.gov.hk. The website also contains other information concerning the study and details of the consultation activities. Copies of the Consultation Digest are available at the following locations:
