Appointment of members of Equal Opportunities Commission

    The Chief Executive has re-appointed and appointed the following persons as members of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for two years with effect from May 20, 2007, a Government spokesman announced today (April 20):

     "We are grateful for the contribution of all the 13 incumbent members to the work of the EOC in the past two years. Their enthusiasm and commitment to the promotion of equal opportunities, and devotion of time to the various areas of work of the EOC are commendable. Their re-appointment will enable the EOC to continue to benefit from their wise counsel," the spokesman said.

     "To further enhance the membership composition of the EOC, three new members have been appointed. They are Ms Chan Ka-mun, J.P., Ms Chan Man-ki, Maggie and Mr Lee Luen-fai.

     "Ms Chan Ka-mun, J.P. is convenor of the Women and Youth Affairs Committee of Heung Yee Kuk. She is also a member of the Kwai Tsing District Council. Her rich experience in community services and womenˇ¦s issues will be beneficial to the work of the EOC.

      "Ms Chan Man-ki, Maggie is a lawyer by profession, and a member of the Wong Tai Sin District Council. Ms Chanˇ¦s expertise in legal matters and extensive experience in community service will also be a valuable asset to the EOC.

     "Mr Lee Luen-fai is an experienced public relations professional and a member of the Women's Commission. His expertise in public relations and women's issues will further enhance EOC's work in various areas.

     "The new EOC Board has achieved a fairly balanced representation of the interests of women, the disabled, employers/employees, legal professionals, academics, ethnic minorities and the community at large. With the concerted efforts of the incumbent and new EOC Members, we are confident that the EOC would continue to enhance its services to the community and contribute to the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of sex, marital status, pregnancy, disability and family status. The EOC will also be tasked as the enforcement authority for the Race Discrimination Bill, currently under scrutiny by the Legislative Council, if and when enacted," the spokesman added.

     The appointment notice will be gazetted on April 27, 2007.
