The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, expressed profound sadness at the passing of Mr Cha Chi-ming.
"Mr Cha has made an invaluable contribution to Hong Kong's reunification with the motherland and the drafting of the Basic Law. He has also played a leading role in Hong Kong's economic takeoff. We are most grateful for all his efforts in ensuring the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong," Mr Tsang said.
Mr Cha was a member of the HKSAR Preparatory Committee, a member of the Basic Law Drafting Committee and a Hong Kong Affairs Adviser. He was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM) in 1997.
Mr Tsang offered his condolences to Mr Cha's family and said that Mr Cha would be fondly remembered for his contribution to Hong Kong.
