*********************************************************

The Government today (March 27) announced the appointment of Mr James Tien Pei-chun as  Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board for three years from April 1.  Mr Tien will succeed Mrs Selina Chow who will retire from the board after six years of dedicated service.

Announcing the appointment today, the Secretary for Economic Development and Labour, Mr Stephen Ip, said Mr Tien was the most suitable person for the job with his wide experience in both the commercial and public sectors. "The tourism industry is one of Hong Kong's economic pillars. With an exemplary record of public and community service (particularly as chairman of the Economic Services Panel of Legislative Council for nine years) as well as extensive commercial experience, Mr Tien has the vision, leadership and capability to bring the development of tourism in Hong Kong to new heights and to enhance the position of Hong Kong as a premier tourist destination," Mr Ip said.

"We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs Chow for her invaluable contribution in steering the board since its reconstitution from the former Hong Kong Tourist Association in 2001.  She has played a pivotal role in transforming the board into an effective marketing-oriented organisation. She has also steered the board to fully garner the support of the tourism and related sectors, as well as establishing close co-operation networks with the Mainland and overseas tourism organisations," he said.

"We are grateful for the contribution of the three outgoing members who have provided invaluable advice and professional expertise over the years through their participation in the board and its committees. We are particularly grateful to Mr Philip Chen and Mr Robert Chow who have been the Chairmen of the Audit Committee and Product and Event Committee of the board respectively. Under their able chairmanship, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has produced a lively and cost-effective promotion programme for visitors in Hong Kong," Mr Ip said.
