Meteorologists from Guangdong and Macau appreciate HKO's automatic weather station (with photo)
*********************************************************

Meteorologists from Guangdong and Macau last Friday (January 26) visited the Observatory's automatic weather station at the Hong Kong Wetland Park, which was set up last year.  The three parties exchanged experience and insight regarding the construction and facilities of weather stations.  The meteorologists expressed appreciation for the Observatory's implementation of automatic weather stations and provision of real-time weather information to the public.

Deputy Director of the Guangdong Meteorological Bureau Mr Xu Yongke said the setting up of an automatic weather station was not simple. "This station is well located and well equipped, and of world-class standard," he said.

Mr Tong Tin-ngai from the Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau said he most appreciated the incorporation of a network camera in the automatic weather station.  It provided real-time weather photos which were very useful to the public.

The automatic weather station at the Hong Kong Wetland Park was jointly built by the Hong Kong Observatory and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.  It started operation in mid-2006.  The station provides air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction and speed, atmospheric pressure and rainfall.  It is also equipped with a network camera to produce real-time weather photos of the Park. People may make use of such information to know about the latest weather conditions around the park.  The weather information is available at the "Regional Weather" webpage of the Observatory - http://www.weather.gov.hk/wxinfo/ts/index.htm.

The 21st Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau seminar on Meteorological Science and Technology was held in Hong Kong between January 24 and 26, during which meteorologists from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau shared results of research and made on-site visits exchanging operational experiences.  More than 20 papers were presented in the seminar covering various topics including typhoons, weather forecasting, severe convective weather, climate, atmospheric research and applied technology.  These papers are accessible at the Observatory home page at http://www.weather.gov.hk/publica/ghm_21.htm.
