The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, today (January 5) visited the Hong Kong Police College on its first anniversary to see the latest development in police training.
Accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Lee Ming-kwai, Mr Tsang was briefed on the development of the college which was established in January, 2006, to provide effective and quality training services in a more strategic and holistic manner.
"The opening of the Hong Kong Police College marked a new era of police training in Hong Kong. I am glad that the college is not only committed to further professional training for officers but also aims to strengthen external collaboration and inculcate a lifelong learning culture within the Force," Mr Tsang said.
He also praised the Force for being one of the forerunners of e-learning in the Government, with awards in 2001 and 2004.
At the college's video production studio, Mr Tsang watched two international-award-winning in-house productions - a video on police recruitment and a training video to promote the Force value of "caring".
Mr Tsang also toured the Tactical Training Complex, a modern training facility with mock shops, roadways, street junctions and residential units as well as an MTR station platform and a train carriage where trainees learn how to deal with various situations which frontline officers might encounter.
"Training in a realistic environment enhances an officer's confidence and professional ability to deal with real situations," the Chief Executive said.
He watched demonstrations of handling an incident on the beat and a suspected vehicle as well as a domestic violence training exercise.
"I am pleased that in addition to law and procedures, officers are being trained to adopt a caring attitude towards victims of domestic violence. They also learn to be good listeners, to manage conflicts and to identify the immediate threats in a family," he said.
Before ending his visit, Mr Tsang met college staff and praised them for their determination to develop the college into a centre of excellence in police training.
"Through commitment to a first-class standard of training, I am confident that the Hong Kong Police College will become one of the finest police training establishments in the world," Mr Tsang said.
During the visit, Mr Tsang also enquired about the condition of the police officer who was injured in an attack while on duty in Tin Shui Wai yesterday. He was pleased to learn that the officer was in stable condition and wished him a speedy recovery.
