Miranda Chin will bring her latest production Chinese Martial Arts Dance Series: Episode VI to Hong Kong next month to showcase dance, martial arts, music and visual arts in an all-in-one performance.
Chin has invited the renowned composer, Chan Ming-chi, as Music Director, Xu Weijun, Professor of Beijing Sports University, Chinese martial arts master of eighth rank and Liu Suibin, China Qing Cheng Wushu Patriarch as martial arts instructor. Liu will also perform in the show.
The latest production adopts the 12 creature forms in the "xingyi quan", a style of martial arts that is rich in dynamic movement, as the main line of choreography, and is supplemented by variations of the movements in "tongbi quan", Chinese painting brushstrokes and fundamental moves in "tai chi". (The 12 creatures that inspire the routines are the cock, the chinese alligator, the monkey, the sparrow hawk, the dragon, the tai bird, the swallow, the horse, the snake, the tiger, the eagle and the bear.)
With live music accompaniment bringing out the five elements - metal, wood, water, fire and earth, the production is a multimedia creation showcasing both martial arts and dance.
Miranda Chin Dance Company is dedicated to the promotion of Modern Chinese dance. Its vitality lies in its creativity as it endeavours to open up new horizons by blending Eastern and Western dance, reflecting in modern dance the uniqueness of Hong Kong culture.
"Chinese Martial Arts Dance Series: Episode VI", presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be staged at 8pm, February 2 and 3 (Friday and Saturday) at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $140 and $90 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
