*****************************************************

The Home Affairs Department today (January 5) appealed to registered electors to exercise their right to vote in the 2007 Village Representative Elections which start tomorrow (January 6).

"There are about 170,000 registered electors and more than 1,600 candidates in the upcoming Village Representative Elections. 995 candidates have been returned uncontested and 634 will compete for a total of 325 seats in the elections," a spokesman for the department said.

Polling will be held from noon to 7pm for five consecutive Saturdays and Sundays until February 4 (Sunday) in respective Villages.

"Electors are required to bring along the relevant polling notice and their identity documents to the designated polling station on election day for their Village. We look forward to their active participation in the polls," the spokesman said.

"The Home Affairs Department places great importance on these elections," the spokesman said. "With the supervision of the Electoral Affairs Commission and assistance from other government departments, we believe the elections will be held in an open, fair and honest manner."
