Vacancy in Sha Tin District Council

    The Director of Home Affairs declares by notice in the Gazette today (December 22) that the office of Mr Wong Kwok-hung, an elected member of the Sha Tin District Council (Kam Ying Constituency) became vacant.

     In accordance with section 24(1)(d)(iii) of the District Councils Ordinance (Cap 547), Mr Wong Kwok-hung was disqualified on December 19, 2006, from holding office.

     Under the relevant provision in the District Councils Ordinance, an elected member is disqualified from holding office if the member, after being elected, is convicted of an offence against Part II of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance (Cap 201).

     Mr Wong was convicted of bribery last year and his appeal against the conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on December 19.

     As the office of Mr Wong on the Sha Tin District Council became vacant, a by-election will be arranged by the Electoral Affairs Commission within three months.
