Appointment of Director-General of Trade and Industry (with photo)

    The Government announced today (December 14) that Mr Joseph Lai Yee-tak, Deputy Secretary for Constitutional Affairs, will take up the post of Director-General of Trade and Industry on January 5, 2007.

     Commenting on the appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue, said: "Mr Lai is an experienced Administrative Officer with rich experience in public administration and proven leadership and management skills. I am confident that he will continue to serve the community with professionalism and dedication in his new capacity, and ably lead the Trade and Industry Department to meet the challenges ahead."

     Brief biographical notes on Mr Joseph Lai Yee-tak are set out below:

     Aged 46. Mr Lai joined the Administrative Service in August 1983 and rose to his present rank of Administrative Officer Staff Grade B1 in April 2005.

     Mr Lai has served in various bureaus and departments, including the former Home Affairs Branch, the former Trade and Industry Branch, Lands Department, the former Finance Branch, the former City and New Territories Administration, the former Economic Services Branch and the former Constitutional Affairs Branch. He was Deputy Secretary for Education and Manpower from October 1997 to May 2001 and Deputy Director-General of Trade and Industry from May 2001 to March 2003. He has been Deputy Secretary for Constitutional Affairs since March 2003.
