SCIT on ITU TELECOM WORLD 2006
******************************

Following is the transcript of the remarks by the Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology (SCIT), Mr Joseph WP Wong, at the welcome reception of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) TELECOM WORLD 2006 this evening (December 3):

Reporter: Can I just ask you to elaborate on what Mr Tsang said about digital inclusion programmes for SMEs and people with disabilities?

SCIT: In fact, he is actually echoing what Professor Yunus said in his speech that in this digital world, it is very important to ensure that people of different abilities, organisations of different sizes should have equal access to the Internet, or to information and communications technology (ICT) facilities. In Hong Kong, of course, we are actually promoting the use and the access of the Internet and ICT services to our small and medium size enterprises which after all make up over 90 per cent of our total industrial base. We are also very keen to ensure that the under-privileged people of Hong Kong should be given opportunity to have access to the various facilities. This is actually laid out in our Digital 21 Strategy and is something which we will be doing and will do more in the future.
