Traffic and Transport Arrangements for Relocation of Ferry Services from Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier to Central Ferry Pier Nos. 7 & 8
***********************************************************

The Transport Department today (November 10) reminded members of the public that the Central berthing points of the four ferry services currently operating at the Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier and a berth at Edinburgh Place outside City Hall will be relocated to Central Ferry Pier Nos. 7 and 8 with effect from Sunday (November 12) in order to tie in with the Central Reclamation Phase III Project.

To bid farewell to the Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier, Star Ferry has organised a charity farewell ride from the pier to Tsim Sha Tsui and special traffic and transport arrangements will be implemented in Edinburgh Place on Saturday night. Details of the traffic and transport arrangements for the two events are as follows:

(A) Charity farewell ride

To facilitate the holding of the charity farewell ride, the northern section of Edinburgh Place between Queen's Pier and Lung Wui Road; and the northbound carriageway of Edinburgh Place between Connaught Road Central and Lung Wui Road will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 11pm on Saturday until 2am the following day. Depending on the crowd, the western section of Edinburgh Place outside Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier may also be closed to all vehicular traffic in the same period. Due to the closure of the western section of Edinburgh Place, NWFB route 13 and green minibus routes 8, 9 and 22 will change to circular operation with an additional stopping point provided at either Connaught Road Central outside Jardine House or Connaught Place outside the General Post Office.

Members of the public are advised that all tickets for the Star Ferry charity farewell ride are  sold out. Depending on the crowd, the ferry company and the Police may implement special crowd management measures including a quota system for the last normal sailing from Central. At the same time, there may be a crowd gathering at Edinburgh Place to bid farewell to the last sailing of the Star Ferry service. Members of the public taking the charity farewell ride or going to the Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier on Saturday night are advised to use public transport services and to take heed of instructions from the Police. Motorists are advised to attend to the temporary road closure arrangements and avoid driving to Edinburgh Place.

(B) Relocation of Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier

The changes of berthing points of the concerned four ferry services are as follows:

Ferry Service              Berthing Point in Central

The Star Ferry Company Limited
Central - Tsim Sha Tsui    Central Pier No.7
Central - Hung Hom         Central Pier No. 8
                           (western berth)
Harbour Tour               Central Pier No. 8
                           (western berth)

Hoi You Ferry Limited
Central - Tsim Sha Tsui    Central Pier No. 8
(East)                     (eastern berth)

Timetables of the above ferry services will remain unchanged.

In connection with the change of berthing points, the Central terminal points for bus routes 15C (Central - Garden Road Peak Tram Station) and 629 (Central - Ocean Park) will be relocated from Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier to Central Ferry Piers from their first departures on Sunday. In addition, the Central terminal point for bus route 15 (Central - the Peak) will be relocated from Exchange Square Bus Terminus to Central Ferry Piers from 10am daily. The change of the bus terminal points will be more convenient to the ferry passengers as they can interchange with about 38 bus routes and 11 green minibus routes serving in the vicinity of the new piers.

The Transport Department will implement the following measures to ensure smooth pedestrian flow and vehicular traffic after the relocation of ferry services:

* Provide and modify over 100 directional signs for guiding pedestrians and drivers to and from the new piers; and

* Closely monitor the traffic around the new piers, and in conjunction with the Police, implement necessary traffic control measures, such as adjusting traffic lights and road markings to enhance traffic flow.

The Transport Department and public transport operators will notify the public of the above information through different channels including setting up exhibition boards at ferry piers, distributing booklets, broadcasting message at radio station, issuing press release and setting up an enquiry hotline. The Transport Department's Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre will monitor the traffic and transport situation in the vicinity of Central Ferry Pier Nos. 7 & 8.

Members of the public, especially ferry passengers, are advised to acquaint themselves with the ferry berthing point changes and connecting transport services in the pier vicinity.
