On the World Health Assembly's endorsement of the nomination of Dr Margaret Chan as the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Non-official Members of the Executive Council today (November 9) issued the following statement:
"All Non-official Members of the Executive Council send our warmest congratulations to Dr Margaret Chan on her successful election as the Director-General of the WHO. Dr Chan's election by a wide margin of votes shows that the WHO has full confidence in her rich experience and outstanding ability. It also shows that with the full support of the Central People's Government, Hong Kong people will be better able to make contributions to the international community.
"Dr Chan is the first Hong Kong resident elected as the leader of an important international organisation to serve the people of the world, bringing honour to the country and Hong Kong. We wish Dr Chan every success in her future endeavours."
