While welcoming the public to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in its venues, the department warned it would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to anyone littering or burning wax.

The department will step up patrols in its venues including parks, public beaches and barbecue sites. On each night from October 5 to 7, around 1,000 staff will be deployed to take enforcement action against offenders.

"People should pack up their rubbish for proper disposal in litter bins," a department spokesman said.

The spokesman warned that littering offenders would be issued with fixed-penalty tickets of $1,500 each.

Under the Pleasure Grounds Regulation, melting or burning wax, or sprinkling or pouring liquid onto hot wax at department venues, which is likely to cause bodily harm or damage property, is prohibited.

"An offender is liable to a maximum fine of $2,000 and 14 days' imprisonment upon conviction," the spokesman said.

He reminded people to place metal cans or non-flammable containers under lit candles to collect melted wax for easy disposal in litter bins.

People can report wax burning cases at department venues by dialling the hotline, 2414 5555, which will operate from 7pm to midnight on October 5, 6 and 7.

"Upon receiving any complaint, we will immediately deploy our staff to the scene to take appropriate enforcement action," the spokesman said.
