Following is the transcript (English portion) of the media session by the Financial Secretary, Mr Henry Tang, after attending the New Territories East regional forum on tax reform this evening (September 21):
Question: Can you say a few words about what you have gained from the forum?
Financial Secretary: I welcome this opportunity to hear the views of the community as far as tax reform is concerned. I believe those who came had a very strong view that the direction of the discussion on broadening tax base was correct. So I welcome that view. And at the same time, they also felt that it was necessary to review whether a tax reform was necessary and how a new tax system could meet the challenges of a knowledge-based society. These are some of the views that came out, and I welcome this opportunity to hear more views.
