The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (August 18) obtained an order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at around $150,000 against an employer in the District Court. The MPFA today also pursued nine claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $160,000 on behalf of 20 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
The District Court today issued a judgment against an employer, namely, May Wah Bags Company Limited. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA the sum of $156,011, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to eight employees of the defendant.
At the Tribunal's hearing today, the two defendants, including Goodtimes Trading Limited and Union Eternal Industries Limited, did not dispute the amounts claimed. The Adjudicator ordered the employers to pay the MPFA the sums of $38,457.69 and $5,430.54, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other seven defendants, including Dayfoong Dyeing and Weaving Factory Limited, Kwong Yip Dyeing Factory Limited, New Style Optical Limited, Tam Chiu Hung trading as Dawn Hair Design, Winmaster Corporation Limited, Ho Tai Wah trading as Tak Sing Construction Co. and Fung Choi Travel Company Limited, did not appear at today's hearing. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $48,194.62, $34,511.58, $17,325, $10,260, $9,805.76, $2,569 and $1,960, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts both awarded at the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court and the Tribunal respectively further awarded payments of $930 for the District Court case and $270, $210, $160, $160, $220, $150, $190, $130 and $180 for the Tribunal cases as costs in respect of the claims.
