E-newsletter on food safety launched
************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (August 16) launched an electronic monthly newsletter "Food Safety Focus", to open up another channel for enhancing dissemination of food safety messages to the public.

"The bilingual newsletter, accessible at www.cfs.gov.hk, is aimed at arousing public awareness of current food safety issues and providing people with professional but easy-to-understand information.

"Different from other publications produced by the Centre, the 'Food Safety Focus' is prepared for those with interest in more in-depth reports of food incidents and food safety issues," a CFS spokesman said.

The "Incident in Focus" column in the first issue carries an article on the recent recall of some chocolate products in the United Kingdom owing to possible salmonella contamination.

"Through reviewing recent food incidents, we hope readers can get a better understanding of the food hazards involved, and risk reduction measures that they can adopt to protect their own health," the spokesman said.

The e-newsletter also consists of a "Food Safety Platform" - a forum for introducing common food safety concepts as well as information about surveys and studies carried out by the Centre.

In the first issue, an article in the Platform explains the concepts of "hazard" and "risk" which are fundamental concepts in understanding food safety issues.
