**********************************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, and a delegation of government officials and about 80 local business leaders, arrived at Nanning today (June 2) for a two-day study tour in Guangxi.

The delegation was greeted this morning by the Vice-chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Mr Li Jinzao, the Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Mr Zhou Bo, and leaders of local government at the Nanning International Airport.

Delegation members then proceeded to the Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Centre to see the Sand Table Display - Nanning Urban Planning and Development. Mr Tsang and the delegation were briefed by the Secretary of Nanning CPC Committee, Mr Ma Biao, and the Mayor of Nanning, Mr Lin Guoqiang, on the local development.

This afternoon, the delegation visited two enterprises in the city. At Nanning Fenghuang Pulp & Paper Co. Ltd., members learnt that the state enterprise was one of the Mainland's largest and most advanced wood pulp manufacturers.

They then toured the Pura Pharm (Nanning) Co., Ltd, which is a high-tech Chinese medicine manufacturer solely owned by a Hong Kong company with an investment of $60 million, and is the only Chinese Medicine manufacturer in the Mainland allowed to produce the full range of Chinese Medicinal granules using traditional Chinese medicine combo formula. This is a successful example of joint venture between Hong Kong's research technology and Guangxi's rich herbal resources.

The delegation then went to the Guangxi Modern Agricultural Park, where they toured the Bagui Farm - the Guangxi Modern Agricultural Science & Technology Demonstration Zone. Bagui Farm is one of the best agricultural demonstration zones on the Mainland with complete function, low input, good effect and local special features.

This evening, the delegation met government officials of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region at the International Convention Centre, Li Yuan Resort. Mr Tsang told Secretary of CPC Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Committee, Mr Cao Bochun, and Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Mr Lu Bin, that the study tour aimed to provide an effective platform for Hong Kong businessmen to understand the investment environment in Guangxi and its developments in recent years.

Mr Tsang said trade ties between Hong Kong and Guangxi could be multi-level and diversified. Guangxi businessmen could fully utilise Hong Kong's edge in financial, logistics and professional services, and enterprises from both sides could join to explore new opportunities.

Mr Tsang said Guangxi's close links with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region would also offer opportunity for tripartite trade ties for Hong Kong businessmen.

He believed delegation members could get a more in-depth understanding of Guangxi's edge through this visit, while the direct interface between enterprises of the two places could facilitate their interactions to look for trade opportunities.

The delegation then attended a welcoming dinner hosted by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Government.

The delegation will tomorrow attend the "Hong KongĦEGuangxi Economic Forum", and visit Fangchenggang City in the afternoon. They will also attend a dinner hosted by the Nanning Municipal Government.

Government officials accompanying Mr Tsang on the visit include the Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology (Commerce and Industry), Miss Yvonne Choi; the Director of Information Services, Mr Edward Yau; and the Information Co-ordinator, Mr Andy Ho.
