Award-winning violinist Wen Wei will join the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra for two concerts in June.
One concert will be at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall on Friday, June 2 and the other at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall on Saturday, June 3, both starting at 8pm.
Under the baton of Dr Yip Wai-hong, the promising violinist will play Sibelius' "Finlandia" and "Violin Concerto in D Minor"; as well as Bach's "Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, BWV1041" with the orchestra.
Born in Chengdu, Sichuan, in 1981, Wen Wei started violin lessons at the age of three, and was admitted to the Secondary School affiliated to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music at 11. When she was 16, she went to the Australian Institute of Music where she was trained in the violin under Zhang Shixiang and Charmian Gadd. In 2002, she was admitted to study for a Master's degree at the Juilliard School with Lin Cho-liang.
Wen has won many international awards. In the ˇ§2005 Sibelius International Violin Competitionˇ¨, the most prestigious event for violinists in the world held every five years, Wen came third out of the 175 competitors from various countries. The Chinese Cultural Attache in Finland attended the competition and congratulated her on her excellent performance. She impressed the panel of judges as well as world-renowned violinists with her strong musicianship and violin skills.
Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, founded by Dr Yip Wai-hong, is a highly organised orchestra which promotes music among the general public especially Hong Kong's young generation. A number of internationally famous conductors and soloists have been invited to perform with it. By using the idioms of popular music and organising concert talks, the orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, and at the same time, brought about an awareness of the indigenous culture of the people.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, tickets priced at $60, $80 and $110 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
