Airport Tunnel renamed as Kai Tak Tunnel
****************************************

The Airport Tunnel, which connects Kowloon City Road in Kowloon City and Kai Fuk Road in Kowloon Bay, will be renamed ˇ§Kai Tak Tunnelˇ¨ with effect from May 4, 2006.

A government spokesman today (March 2) said that after consulting the Kowloon City District Council and the public, the Government proposed that the Airport Tunnel be renamed ˇ§Kai Tak Tunnelˇ¨ to commemorate the former Hong Kong International Airport, which was commonly known as the Kai Tak Airport.

The name ˇ§Airport Tunnelˇ¨ appears in the Schedule to the Road Tunnels (Government) Ordinance and the Second Schedule to the Road Tunnels (Government) Regulations.  To give effect to the proposal, it is necessary to amend both Schedules by making the Road Tunnels (Government) (Amendment of Schedule) Notice 2006 and the Road Tunnels (Government) (Amendment) Regulation 2006.  The Notice and Amendment Regulation will be published in the Gazette tomorrow (March 3) and will take effect on May 4, 2006.

ˇ§We will inform the public and relevant parties of the renaming arrangement.  We hope that people will become familiar with the new name of the Tunnel soon,ˇ¨ the spokesman said.
