Nominations urged for election of education council
***************************************************

    Schools and educational bodies have been reminded to send in nominations for the election of the Council on Professional Conduct in Education before noon next Tuesday (March 7).

     A spokesman for the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) said today (March 1) that each school may nominate a serving regular registered teacher, including the school head, to stand for the election.

     "Teachers may also run for the election as independent candidates if they have the support of 60 serving registered or permitted teachers serving in the same type of school," the spokesman said.

     "Education organisations already been approved to join the Hong Kong Teachers' Centre as an organisation-member have been invited to make nominations."

     All nominations must reach the bureau before the deadline.

     The spokesman called on teachers, schools and educational bodies to participate in the poll and support the council election.

     The council was set up in April, 1994, following the recommendations in the Education Commission Report No 5. Its terms of reference are:

* To advise the Government on measures to promote professional conduct in education;

* To draft operational criteria defining the conduct expected of an educator and to gain widespread acceptance of these criteria among all sectors of the education community; and

* To advise the Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower on cases of disputes or alleged professional misconduct involving educators.

     The council has a total of 28 seats of three categories - the organisation-nominated category (11 seats), teacher-nominated category (14 seats) and members appointed by the Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower (3 seats).

     The new term of office will run for two years from May, 2006, until April, 2008.
