CHP to hold seminar on avian flu for local health care professionals

    Local and overseas experts on infectious diseases will pool their knowledge and expertise in fighting avian flu and the use of anti-viral drugs against the disease during a seminar organised by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health tomorrow (January 21).

     As part of the effort to gear up Hong Kong's preparedness in the fight against avian flu, the seminar is aimed at updating local health care professionals on the latest situation of avian flu and the latest public health and laboratory diagnostic issues as well as clinical treatment of the disease.

     More than 700 local health care practitioners will attend the seminar to be held at the Crystal Ballroom, Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Tsim Sha Tsui. The Director of Health, Dr PY Lam, will address at the opening ceremony.

     Topics of the seminar include the Government's preparedness for pandemic flu; pathogenesis of avian flu H5N1; clinical protocol in management of avian flu and antivirals for seasonal and avian flu.

     The keynote speaker of the seminar is Professor Frederick Hayden from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He is a world-renowned expert in clinical virology.

     Other speakers are Chairman of the CHP's Scientific Committee on Emerging and Zoonotic Disease, Professor Yuen Kwok-yung; Professor Malik Peiris and Dr Chen Honglin from the University of Hong Kong; Professor Paul Chan from the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Dr Lai Sik To from the Hospital Authority; and Dr Thomas Tsang and Dr Ronald Lam from the CHP.
