Notification of human avian flu case in Sichuan received

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health received notification today (January 18) from the Ministry of Health confirming a human case of avian influenza H5N1 in Sichuan Province.
A CHP spokesman said the patient was a 35-year-old woman who developed symptoms on January 3. She was admitted to hospital on January 10 with fever and pneumonia. She died on the following day.
The CHP will maintain close liaison with the Ministry of Health to obtain more information on the case.
