Another HK triumph in China Mathematical Olympiad
*************************************************

The two silvers and four bronzes won by six secondary students in the China Mathematical Olympiad 2006 (CMO) was Hong Kong's best ever achievement in the competition.

"The two silver winners, Chung On-yip and Fong Pok-wai, are both Secondary Five students. They netted three silvers in China Western Mathematical Olympiad 2004 and International Mathematical Olympiad 2005. Their further achievement in this competition is encouraging," a spokesman for the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) said today (January 18).

Held from January 10 to 15 in Fuzhou, Fujian, CMO 2006 was jointly organised by the China Mathematical Society Olympiad Committee and Fuzhou No. 1 Middle School. A total of 151 mathematically gifted secondary students from 34 teams participated in the Olympiad.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macau Special Administrative Region and Russia were invited to join provinces of China to take part in the competition.

"The CMO aims at enhancing students' standard of mathematics and motivation in learning and identifying the mathematically gifted. It also serves to step up the interflow of mathematics education among all the provinces and territories in China," the spokesman said.

"Student participants were able to visit cultural relics and historical sites in Fuzhou. Members of the Hong Kong team actively participated in sharing sessions to better acquaint themselves with the motherland, to boost their sense of national identity, and to strengthen their communication and interpersonal skills."

The Hong Kong team comprised members of the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme, which was established by the EMB in late 2000. Members of the Hong Kong team were selected from the International Mathematical Olympiad -- Hong Kong Preliminary Contest organised by the scheme. The scheme provided structured enhancement programmes in mathematics and other learning areas to help students develop their potential to the fullest.

The results of the Hong Kong team are as follows:
