CHP closely monitors cases of human avian flu in Turkey
*******************************************************

The Department of Health is paying close attention to cases of human avian influenza H5N1 in Turkey and is reminding travellers going to Turkey to remain vigilant and observe good personal hygiene.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the department has been maintaining close contact with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Consulate General of Turkey to obtain more information on the situation in the country.

Information from the WHO revealed that there were four laboratory-confirmed cases in the country. About 30 other patients, suspected to be infected, are under treatment and evaluation. Most of these cases were children, and the majority came from the rural district of Dogubayazit.

To date, all evidence indicates that patients have acquired their infections following close contact with diseased poultry. The WHO has not issued any travel advisory.

The Port Health Office of the department has arranged the broadcasting of health messages on board all in-bound flights from Turkey since October 15, 2005. Leaflets with health information are also being distributed to passengers leaving for the country.

The Department of Health has also contacted the travel industry with a view to informing them about the latest situation and giving them relevant health advice.

The latest information and health advice on avian influenza for travellers has been updated and is available at the Department of Health's Hong Kong Travel Health Service Website (http://www.travelhealth.gov.hk).

Travellers should avoid direct contact with poultry and birds, and if contact has been made, they should wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Poultry and eggs should be thoroughly cooked before eating.

People who have developed influenza-like illnesses are also urged to consult a doctor promptly. They should also reveal their recent travel history to the doctor.

If travellers wish to obtain more information on avian influenza, they may call the 24-hour pre-recorded health education hotline 2833 0111 or visit the CHP website http://www.chp.gov.hk.
